- A South African yacht is in difficulty off the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, the SABC reported on Tuesday.
Rescue co-ordinators say the 45-foot catamaran Clandara was demasted in a storm about 1 200km southeast of the island.
This happened two weeks after leaving Durban for Australia with three South Africans and one Australian on board. The vessel then used its motor to head for Mauritius, but has now run out of fuel.
Shipping in the area has been asked to assist. The rescue operation is being co-ordinated by Mauritian maritime authorities.
A French naval vessel has been sent to rescue the four men on board the yacht, the broadcaster said

Help is on the way for three South Africans and one Australian crew on board the catamaran Clandara. The yacht lost its mast, sail and radio antenna when it was hit by a heavy storm in the Indian Ocean two days ago.
Clandara is currently adrift 600 nautical miles off Reunion. The crew is fast running out of food and water. A Russian-registered merchant vessel Nino M, which was in the vicinity, has been redirected to assist the troubled Clandara. This was confirmed by the Reunion Rescue Coordination Centre.
The men are not out of danger yet. A wind storm and six-metre swells are predicted for the area tonight. The Clandara and its crew left Durban two weeks ago to deliver the yacht in Australia. On board is the delivery skipper Charles Wasserfall, the Australian owner Arthur Envar, Rodney Wolhuter and Craig Durheim. It is believed most of them are experienced yachtsmen. A merchant Russian ship has rescued the four men on board the catamaran Clandara yacht adrift in the Indian Ocean after it was reported world-wide that Reunion Authorities were refusing to assist unless the situation was ''life threatening''.
Justin McCall, nephew of Craig Durrheim, one of the crew members of Clandara, told Sail-World that the rescued men had found themselves among a group of Ukranian sailors, who were ''treating them very well''.
As the yacht's hull was split and was sinking, it has been abandoned. It will now take them 17 days or so to get through to Japan, the destination of the ship. From there they will fly to Australia.
